The World Future Symposium – Chicago 2009 – “Be prepared”
by Rex Miller
I just returned from the World Future Symposium. I introduced The Commercial Real Estate Revolution along with a model for leading innovation. The room was full and the response? The message of the book is hitting a raw nerve. Many of the presentations focused on how rapidly our institutions are reaching an inflection point. The commercial real estate industry and the built environment is at that point. The audience, many green advocates and “experts,” were surprised the hear that cars emit only 6.5% of our green house gases compared to buildings at 48%. They were shocked to hear that up to 50% of the cost and effort constructing a building is waste. None were surprised that projects finish late and over budget over 70% of the time.
Don Tapscott, author of several best selling books related to digital culture, gave the opening keynote. This video clip is not from the keynote but captures the message. We have few reference points for what moving forward means or looks like. Elaborate planing will likely be replaced by a simple motto: “Be prepared.”
It is well worth watching.

We are just beginning to scratch the surface of global awareness on how the human race is impacting the Earth. Once the building models of our economic structure begin to change we will learn how to grow the world economy, maintain profitability and sustain the environment. This may very well be the re-setting point and I am optimistic that our future is bright and we find a way to make the decisions that is right for our planet.
